HI! ANXIETY HERE…CAN WE CHAT A BIT?

Shreya couldn’t sleep at night before her exams, and speaking in front of a large audience made her body tremble. Sounds familiar? Maybe your heart beats at an abnormal rate like it did for Shreya while proposing to someone. This is known as “Anxiety” but hey, relax! It’s nothing to be scared of. Shreya got over it and so can you!

In fact,  anxiety is something everybody experiences, just that some may experience it more than others. Anxiety is a physical and emotional response to a stressful situation. It can manifest itself as a feeling of fear, dread, or uneasiness or it may cause you to sweat profusely, feel restless, tensed, and have a rapid heartbeat. Some may even make countless trips to the washroom and that’s completely normal.

Anxiety versus Anxiety Disorder. Do you know the difference?

Many people mistake anxiety for a disorder however there is a very thin line between anxiety and anxiety disorder. Anxiety is a normal reaction to many different kinds of events and situations in our daily lives but it turns into anxiety disorder when you feel anxiety in the absence of any event or situation. So why don’t we talk about the events that make our hearts beat faster? (not that Christina Perry song tho)

Our lives are filled with Instagram posts, Snapchat stories, news articles, and tweets. There’s no surprise that our anxiety levels are at an all-time high. Do you realize that we are constantly surrounded by events and situations in the virtual world?

Due to the rise in engagement on social media, a lot of mental health issues have surged. People have started chasing after the ideals and standards set by constantly having access to other people’s lives which has resulted in an increase in anxiety issues among teenagers and young adults. As people who grew up with the rise of social media and technology, teenagers and young adults know better than anyone how easy it is to gain information.

So how did Shreya deal with it?

We asked Shreya about her personal experience of anxiety and how she dealt with it during stressful times, Shreya replied “ anxiety has always been an obstacle in my life, I was never able to enjoy my life to the fullest unlike everybody around me. I was constantly overthinking and socializing was the hardest part of it all.” We further asked her about how she was able to cope with the same and so she said therapy is the best solution! And we totally agree.

Therapy needs to be normalized; it is currently one of the biggest “stigma” surrounding mental health. People often associate therapy with being “crazy” however it is far from that. Even our close ones tend to ignore the signs and are oblivious to the fact that we do need therapy even if it is to sort through an overwhelming number of emotions. So, coming back to anxiety are you ready to beat it and “END THE STIGMA”?
