IS ADHD A SUPERPOWER?

Do you ever feel like you have trouble focusing? Feel like you are overly active, and have trouble controlling impulsive behavior? Well, if you do there is a name for that, it is called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder often known as ADHD. It includes “disorder” in its name only huh? Well, don’t let it scare you. We’re here to give you a little glimpse of what ADHD could look like.

Mayank a student has been suffering from ADHD his whole life. Couldn’t diagnose it at an early age which led him to be turned away by his teachers and he was constantly yelled at for not paying attention, being teased by his friends for crying at small things and the thought of everyone hating him stayed in his mind rent-free. Later as a psychology student, he learned about ADHD and consulted a psychiatrist. But before that, he did some research as to what is ADHD and found out that it could also be a superpower.

Some reasons why we associate ADHD with a superpower:

· People with ADHD are SUPER CREATIVE. There is nothing for which they don’t have a solution. They have a lot of ideas in their mind all the time and know how to creatively carry them out.

· There isn’t a massive difference between an ADHD brain and a non-ADHD brain but one difference that definitely discerns is COMPASSION. People with ADHD are very empathetic and compassionate in every relationship.

·“Sometimes my mom gets amazed by my memory, that how do I remember little things from my past?” Said Mayank. YES, MEMORY AND OBSERVATION SKILLS are something ADHD brains have in abundance.

· MULTITASKING: People with ADHD can manage to do a lot of tasks together. Now you might have heard that people with ADHD when assigned a lot of work get confused and that’s true because their minds are always observing things which makes them forget some of the work and they end up getting confused, but at the end of the day, the work still gets done.

· “Nah, I don’t need any coffee to survive the day. I’m FULL OF ENERGY and there is no need for a break we can keep going,” said Mayank when we asked him if he needs a break. People with ADHD are so full of energy and sometimes it may get a little exhausting for others but for people with ADHD, their batteries never run out!

Many other things can be categorized as a superpower like acceptance, a strong moral compass, zeal for life, and laser focus (only when you do something you are interested in).

Living amongst us are some super humans but that doesn’t mean they are or cannot be vulnerable, they are humans after all and every human has the right to be living their life to the fullest and if something is coming in the way of that, then they have every right to conquer that “something” and set things straight. So, are you ready to conquer your ADHD and END THE STIGMA?
